Wave Analysis

Multiple vessels have lost up to 2,000 containers in heavy weather over recent months. Beyond the significant financial impact on shipping companies, container loss also poses a serious threat to the marine environment. One of the main contributing factors is excessive rolling and pitching, which compromises container stability and can ultimately lead to containers going overboard.

JRC’s JMR-7200/9200 navigational radar addresses this risk through its Wave Analysis function, available via a simple software upgrade.

This function measures wave height, direction, and length, providing clear and reliable data even in rough sea conditions. With this information, navigational officers gain practical decision support to adjust course and speed, helping to minimize vessel motion.

The analysis is powered by JRC’s TM Blizzard radar signal processor, which enables accurate wave measurement alongside reliable target detection by optimizing scan correlation and pulse length. The system can analyze wave conditions within a 4 km² area ahead of the vessel, at a range of approximately 1.5–2 NM, while maintaining standard ship detection up to 12 NM—effectively acting as a dual-layer awareness system.

When combined with the JRC Dynamic Sensor JLR-21, which measures vessel motion across three axes, the system delivers a comprehensive conning display integrating both wave and motion data. This gives the crew a clear, real-time picture to support safer navigation decisions in challenging conditions.

By providing accurate wave analysis and actionable insights, the system helps reduce excessive vessel motion and significantly lowers the risk of container loss.
