GMDSS amendements

After conducting a thorough examination of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), the International Maritime Organization (IMO) MSC 105 approved a series of amendments to finalize the modernization efforts for the GMDSS. These changes are intended to facilitate the future incorporation of contemporary communication systems within the GMDSS framework, while simultaneously eliminating outdated prerequisites. Effective communication between ships and shore, as well as search and rescue (SAR) operations at sea, relies on the integrated satellite and terrestrial radiocommunication system implemented in the GMDSS. The revision of the GMDSS focuses on promoting the adoption of modern communication systems and eliminating the necessity to carry obsolete equipment.

Revisions to SOLAS Chapter IV encompass the adoption of broad terms for GMDSS technologies, the merging of regulations for VHF radio telephone apparatus and SART (Search and Rescue Transponder), modifications in sea area coverage, and the exclusion of the NBDP (Narrow Band Direct Printing) function from MF/HF radio installations. These amendments become effective on January 1, 2024.
